About the Film

Hillcrest Village tells the story of an innovative housing initiative developed by the community of Northfield, Minnesota. The net-zero neighborhood provides support for families in need of emergency, transitional and long-term housing.

Synopsis

The Community Action Center and neighbors, engineers, architects, environmentalists, social justice advocates and builders tell the story of how they worked together to answer the needs in their community.

Project Details

  • AIA Film Challenge

    This work was created as part of the AIA Film Challenge, which aims to tell stories of architects partnering with communities and civic leaders to design a healthy, sustainable, just world that improves peoples’ lives. The project was highlighted in the weekly edition of the AIA Minnesota Enter newsletter.

  • Grant-funded Work

    Wendy Placko is a fiscal year 2021 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

  • Women in Architecture

    My friend Elizabeth Turner, architect and passive building consultant was an inspiration for the film. Her firm Precipitate Architecture consulted on how to design and model Hillcrest Village in a way that would meet Passive Building standards., thereby putting less energy burden on the future residents of the property.
